CSR Initiatives: JAL Amrit

The enormity of the drinking water crisis in India and developing nations requires innovation and collaboration on a massive scale-not only from their respective governments, but also from not-for-profits and the private sector as well.

Objective of the JAL Amrit

To provide sustainably access to safe and affordable drinking water while fostering economic vitality and enhanced quality of life of marginalized communities living in rural areas and urban slums.

Vision Statement

Mission Statement

To sustainably provide WHO Standards quality drinking water to all and enriches local economies.

*                 To protect the environment by conserving water using sustainable water harvesting technologies and processing it further to provide safe drinking water to rural communities and urban slums.

*                 To educate, engage and involve the community by conducting IEC Campaigns to enlighten them on use of safe drinking water on a sustainable basis.

*                 To empower women by providing skill training and deliver livelihood opportunities in harvesting, processing and distribution of safe drinking water.

*                 To provide customized low cost solutions in water and hygiene and encourage to promote effective policies and strategies to build capacity in areas of water and hygiene.

*                  To enable industries, manufacturing and processing companies achieve a guaranteed Water Positive Status or a ZERO Water Footprint.

Together with our corporate sponsors we can address affordable, safe water access, identify opportunities to advance these solutions and foster best practices.

What Drinking Water Security Means

Every rural person has adequate safe water for drinking and cooking on a sustainable basis. Safe potable water should be readily and conveniently accessible at all times and in all situations.

What Drinking Water Security Involves

*                   Plan for improved rural water supply service, based on clear operating, maintenance and management procedures including clear operation and maintenance (O&M) cost recovery policy, measurement for equitable distribution, and transparent arrangement for renewal, replacement and expansion of the source and/or the systems.

*                   Design and implement of a series of preventive measures at the basin, source, system and household levels to protect water quality and develop water quality testing facilities at appropriate levels in the field for ensuring the quality of drinking water supply.

*                   Measure water availability and supply (water budgeting), implement measures to conserve, protect, enhance and manage surface and ground water resources (including construction of rainwater harvesting and ground water recharge structures), develop local self-regulation for water demand management, modify agricultural practices and crop patterns and use of more efficient irrigation systems to ensure source sustainability.

JAL Amrit Highlight

*                   Having a ground breaking self-sustainable business model, enabling the sponsor company to deploy their CSR funds as ONE TIME project CAPEX and service the local community for 20-25 years.

*                   The pillars of our business model are sustainability of the solution in all three forms- Economic, Social and Environmental, which is enabling us to deliver highly affordable clean water to even the most remote, low income, rural and urban communities.

*                   Harvesting rain water from monsoon streams, nallas and low lying flood lands and inject them underground to recharge the underground aquifers and creating new underground water reservoirs in Sub-Soil Strata of the earth. This is achieved with deep respect for the environment and ensuring that our solution is Green and Environmentally Friendly and has minimum possible adverse impact on the water sources and the environment.

*                   Adopting cutting edge disruptive technologies to setup decentralized RO water purification centers in rural areas annexed to the water harvesting sites in partnership with local government, NGOs, Panchayats, SHGs and local communities to create scalable and sustainable supply of clean and healthy drinking water to 500-1,500 families living in village clusters within 3-5 Km. radius of the RO water purification centers.

*                   To transporting and delivering safe drinking water in small tankers to JAL Amrit ATM Centers setup at villages in partnership with local communities dispensing drinking water at affordable rates. Also to enable local entrepreneurs and/or SHGs to deliver the water within reasonable distance at an extra nominal cost, thereby enabling them to earn livelihood and us to reach the most remote low income rural communities.

*                   To make our processes and systems self-sustainable and economically viable, to conduct education and awareness campaigns to bring in behavioral change and move people away from contaminated water and disease to health and prosperity.

*                   The initiative to promote women empowerment by training and employing economically disadvantaged local women to manage and operate the rain water harvesting systems, RO water purification centers, water transportation and distribution network.

*                   To achieve ZERO waste in JAL Amrit, the RO waste water having high TDS shall be utilized for growing and irrigating flora and fauna which can withstand high TDS water.

Why JAL Amrit

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that India accounts for 21 percent of the world’s global burden of disease.24 WHO estimates that, in India, about ~38 m people are affected by waterborne diseases every year, of which over 75% are children; 780,000 deaths are attributable to contaminated water and more than 400,000 are attributed to diarrhea alone. This also generates an economic cost for the country. This was last estimated at INR 4,078 Crores (US$600 million) annually as almost 73 million working days are lost due to waterborne disease each year. Notably, India ranked a low 120th out of 122 nations for its water quality and 133rd out of 180 nations for its water availability. The most common waterborne diseases in India are diarrhea, enteric fever, and cholera. Acute Diarrheal Disease (ADD) is the most common waterborne disease across India. Globally, diarrhea is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old with around 760,000 deaths attributed to it annually. In 2009, there were around 12 million reported cases of ADD and about 1,800 deaths in India directly linked to ADD. The rationale for safe drinking water becomes even stronger when the health issues and their economic burden on rural households are considered. Rural consumers who understand the health benefits of safe water are usually willing to switch to safe water sooner to avoid health-related costs.

Rain Water Harvesting System

Naireeta Services Private Limited (NSPL),

NSPL has developed an innovative Water Harvesting-cum-Management Technology called BHUNGROO. BHUNGROO is an award winning rain water harvesting solution which enables runoff water to be conserved and injected underground in an induced natural reservoir.

BHUNGROO is a water management system that injects and stores excess rainfall underground and lifts it out for use in dry spells. The massive underground reservoir can hold as much as 100 million liters of rain water. It harvests water for about 10 days per year and can supply water for as long as seven months to be used for agriculture and drinking purpose.

BHUNGROO is a climate change mitigation solution that can alleviate natural disasters caused by flash floods and drought while also improving soil salinity by applying physics principles of low v/s high density equilibrium.

BHUNGROO ensures water for irrigation, guarantees food security, and enhances livelihood; it also ensures water logging solution, soil erosion control, drought resilience, cultivation period extension, better crop yield, cropping intensity, and livestock rearing.

BHUNGROO started in 2006. Since then it has reached over 3500 units in India and abroad. Under WCL and SHG Programmes built 2400 units empowering over 20,000 women enabling them gain food security for 100,000 family members collectively.

BHUNGROO has been successfully implemented in over 200 drought affected regions in Patan District of Gujarat. It has also been successfully implemented in other States of India like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Odisha.
